The thought of vegetables should not put you off trying a healthy vegetarian diet
Defined Tag: Healthy Vegetarian Diet. A healthy vegetarian diet will exclude all meat and animal products such as beef, pork, lamb, chicken and turkey. Depending upon preferences it may also exclude fish, seafood and dairy products such as milk and eggs. All the vitamins, nutrients and minerals which might normally be found in a meat-based diet can be replaced by non-meat foods and it’s necessary to ensure that they are. This isn’t as difficult as it may first appear, and may even end up being preferable. The definition of vegetarian differs widely, and there are even more terms which attempt to specify more precisely the variations on the idea: such as ‘Lacto-vegetarians’ which refers to those who don’t eat meat or eggs but do consume dairy products such as milk and cheese; ‘lacto-ovo-vegetarians’ which refers to those who don’t eat meat but do eat eggs and dairy produce; ‘pollo-vegetarians’ which refers to those who don’t eat red-meat but allow themselves poultry such as chicken; ‘pesca-vegetarians’ who don’t eat meat, dairy or eggs but do eat fish and or seafood; and then at the furthest extreme there are vegans who eat none of the variations listed so far and tend, also to abstain from wearing leather, wool, or other animal product based clothing. As you can imagine, none of these are really definitive terms, nor do they entirely encompass the wide variety of preferences and ideologies that people display when turning to a non-meat type diet. The mind boggles at the possible further varieties of terms which might be allowed and we have to wonder what might happen if meat-eaters started to separate themselves into categories according to their preferences. So it is safest to use the term ‘vegetarian’ and assume that those who prefer to introduce meat to their diet can suit themselves as to what term best describes them and if one is necessary. The mainstay of a veggie diet is, of course, vegetables; but as we have already seen, this is not the end of it; there is a vast abundance of fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, pulses, rices and other vegetation which go together to allow a infinitely variable diet which is restricted in the imagination by it’s being so closely related to the word ‘vegetable’ and the innate dullness that word summons up in the mind of a meat eater. Similarly, we tend to display a puritanical scorn towards what is ‘healthy’ in life and tend to assume that the unhealthy is more fun and more luxurious; yet this is far from the truth. A healthy vegetarian diet can be as luxurious in tastes and exotic in texture as any non-specific meat diet.
