Unlike many fad diets, the vegetarian diet has persisted through all these years because of its effectiveness in providing health benefits to people who have embraced it. In fact, many individuals who are in a vegetarian diet believe that being vegetarian is not merely refusing to eat pork or beef, but is already a way of life.

The staple food of people in a vegetarian diet includes cereals and grains (brown rice, wholegrain bread, muesli, etc), fruits and vegetables, and nuts, seeds and legumes. Although strict vegetarian do not drink milk or other dairy products, many still consume dairy goods but only sparingly. If you are in a vegetarian diet, you actually eat anytime of the day. Since most of your food choices are healthy and free from saturated fat and refined sugar, it is actually acceptable to eat even hefty servings of vegetarian food everyday.

If you want to be a vegetarian, it is important that you eat a well balanced diet. You cannot just eat carrots and legumes all the time. You need to have some carbohydrates, proteins and fruits and vegetables in your diet throughout the day.

Benefits Of Well-Balanced Vegetarian Diet:

Better digestion

The primary benefit of being a vegetarian is good digestion. Since the food choices of vegetarians include a lot of fiber, they rarely have problems with indigestion, constipation, and other gastrointestinal diseases.

Healthier and more glowing skin

People who eat more vegetables and fruits end up having clearer and rosier skin. This is probably because they eat less fat in their diet and they do not have problems with eliminating body waste because their digestive tracts are functioning efficiently. Furthermore, fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help promote healthier skin

Prevents obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease

Vegetarians who eat well-balanced, high-fiber and low-fat meals are less likely to develop serious diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery problems, according to various studies. Moreover, since the diet of vegetarians is mostly composed of raw vegetables, fruits and whole grains, there is also a big probability that they will not have any problem with obesity.

Since vegetarians love to eat foods containing antioxidant, phytochemicals, lignans and other healthy ingredients, they have better metabolism rate, stronger immune system, and increased antioxidant activity.

Lower risk of developing some types of cancer

In 1997, the World Cancer Research Fund reported that our risk to having cancer is greatly decreased by increased daily intake of legumes and vegetables and fruits and lower consumption of food using refined sugar and starch. Several studies all over the world also showed that eating fruits and vegetables on a regular basis could significantly lower a person's risk of cancer, particularly epithelial cancers.

Longer Life

A study conducted by Loma Linda University showed that vegetarians live around seven years longer than meat-eating people. This is probably due to healthier bodies and lesser risks of developing chronic diseases, like diabetes and heart problems.

Stronger bones

If you want to have stronger bones, you may want to consider the vegetarian diet. Some researchers have proved that vegetarian women aged 65 only has an average bone loss of 18% compared to about 36% for female meat eaters of the same age. Moreover, studies have also shown that excessive protein in the diet (which most meat eaters are guilty of) hinders the retention and absorption of calcium.
