If you have decided to give a vegetarian way of life a shot, the good news is that it is relatively easy to plan out a healthy vegetarian diet. By learning more about what vitamins and nutrients you need to include in your daily diet, it is possible to get everything you need without ever consuming any type of animal product. Here are a few simple tips to help you plan out a healthy vegetarian diet.

One of the main factors that would be vegetarians often overlook is making sure there is enough protein in the diet. For most people, meat serves as the main source of this important part of a balanced eating plan. However, there are a number of other foods that will also supply enough protein to keep your body healthy. Look into the wide range of legumes and find ways to incorporate them into each meal. While not as rich in protein as most meats, they can provide the minimum daily requirement. Best of all, legumes will contain less of other substances that you don't need, such as cholesterol and high fat content.

In order to include other nutrients that you need, take a rainbow approach to your meals. Make sure that you have at least four different vegetables in each meal, and that each one is a different color. Always include at least a green vegetable, along with a protein source. Don't forget that fruits can also be served as side dishes, and can also be mixed with vegetables. For example, a side dish of broccoli, mandarin orange slices, and water chestnuts will be filling and loaded with nutrients.

Soy may be a great way to get what you need and also give you a sense of having a meat entrée with the meal. Today, there are a number of meat substitutes that are soy based and tasty. Check some of them out, and see if they help to fill those occasional yearnings for a hamburger or a piece of chicken.

Planning a healthy vegetarian diet has never been easier. To get into the swing of things, purchase a couple of good vegetarian cookbooks or go online and visit cooking sites that specialize in vegetarian dishes. You may soon find that you don't miss meat and dairy products at all.
