If your doctor has recently told informed you that your body is now in a prediabetic or diabetic state, you already know that making some changes in the way you eat is going to be a must. In some cases, you will need to make some drastic changes, while in other cases you will simply need to moderate the frequency and amount of certain foods. Here are a few tips to help you begin formulating your new diabetes vegetarian diet, and living a healthy life.

First, there are two main elements you must observe as part of your new eating plan. Carbohydrates and starches must be kept within a certain range. Both of these elements can cause rises in your blood glucose level that you do not want to have occur. You will no doubt need to rethink all those potatoes, corn, and even some fruits that you current eat.  Work with a nutritionist to identify what a healthy range of carbs and starches to include in your diet, as well as foods that can supply you with forms of these elements that are less likely to cause a spike followed by a rapid drop in your blood sugar.

Next, realize that your days of having a lot of sweets are now behind you. This does not mean you cannot have a treat from time to time, but it will take careful planning. For example, if you have used honey a great deal in your vegetarian diet, this will now have to change. Look for other ways to create sweet surprises that are less of a shock to your system.  For example, baked apples with a touch of cinnamon instead of apple pie is a likely substitution. The lack of extra sweeteners plus the fact that cinnamon can help regulate blood sugar levels makes this a great option.

Last, think green. Dark green vegetables such as broccoli, collards, and mustard greens are loaded with essential nutrients and also are kind to your blood glucose level. Steam them with onions, chickpeas, and red peppers for a dish that is healthy, nutritious and safe. Be creative and you will find that going on a diabetes vegetarian diet is not so bad after all. In fact, you may eat better than ever before.
